How to Do Lakshmi Puja at Home on Diwali 2026: A Step-by-Step Guide
A simple order of steps for families doing the puja themselves, with a samagri list.
Lakshmi Puja on Diwali falls on 8 November 2026. Many families now do it at home without a priest, and the most common worry is the order of steps. Below is a simple, widely followed sequence. Traditions differ by region and family, so treat it as a starting point, and check the exact muhurat for your city in a local panchang.
Before the puja: prepare the space
- Clean the house, especially the entrance and the puja area, and decorate the doorway with rangoli and a toran
- Place a raised platform (chowki) and cover it with a red or yellow cloth
- Keep an idol or picture of Goddess Lakshmi and Lord Ganesha on the platform
- Arrange diyas around the home, ready to light at the muhurat
A simple order of steps
Most families follow a sequence close to this:
- Light a lamp and invoke Lord Ganesha first, as is customary before any puja
- Place a kalash with water, mango leaves and a coconut beside the idols
- Offer flowers, haldi-kumkum and rice (akshat) to Goddess Lakshmi
- Offer sweets, fruits and coins, and light incense
- Recite the Lakshmi mantras or aarti your family follows
- Perform the aarti, then light diyas across the house
- Share the prasad with the family
Samagri checklist
- Lakshmi and Ganesha idol or picture, chowki and red cloth
- Kalash, coconut, mango leaves, fresh flowers and garlands
- Diyas, ghee or oil, cotton wicks, incense, camphor
- Haldi, kumkum, rice, betel leaves and nuts, coins
- Sweets, fruits and dry fruits for the offering
If you are arranging it for parents from abroad
For NRI families, the hard part is getting fresh flowers, the samagri and the decoration done on the day in India. Order flowers and samagri a few days ahead, and book help for cleaning and decoration early, because the week before Diwali is the busiest of the year for every vendor.
